In our region, daytime highs will be in the 30 to 32 range, with humidex values in the upper 30s, possibly even flirting with 40 or more.
Due to the extreme heat, the City of Barrie is making all public facilities available, during normal operating hours, for cooling centres.
The heat will also factor into waste collection services in Barrie.
Due to the health risk the heat poses for curbside waste collectors, the city says collection will begin early on Monday, June 23.
Residents are asked to put their waste out for curbside collection anytime after 7 p.m. the night before or before 5 a.m. on collection day.
During a high heat alert, the public are reminded to:
- Rest frequently in shaded areas.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Never leave infants, children or pets in a parked car.
As of Friday afternoon, heat warnings were only in effect for southwestern Ontario, where Environment Canada says the heat index in the Windsor, Chatham and Sarnia areas over the next few days will be between 41 and 46 degrees.
Those heat warnings may be extended to other areas of the province.
