As warmer weather settles into the region, Simcoe County is winding down its winter warming centre program and reflecting on a season that saw hundreds of vulnerable residents access shelter and support during extreme cold.

All seasonal warming centres have closed following what officials described as the snowiest winter in recent memory.

Eight warming centres operated across Simcoe County this winter, including around-the-clock facilities in Barrie and Orillia. Together, the sites provided 7,494 overnight stays for 846 unique individuals seeking a warm and dry place to sleep.

The centres also offered daytime relief from harsh weather conditions. County figures show 353 people accessed warming services on 885 occasions during the coldest days of the season.

Housing and Support Connections

Beyond providing shelter from the elements, warming centres served as a gateway to longer-term support services.

"Through Orillia's warming centre alone, staff were able to help eleven individuals transition into permanent housing, while connecting many others to emergency shelters, housing resources, and healthcare services," says Simcoe County Warden Basil Clarke.

The county says individuals using the centres were connected with a variety of services, including emergency shelters, food banks, healthcare supports, Ontario Works programs, supportive housing and bridge housing initiatives.

Many warming centre locations also provided meals, laundry facilities and donated clothing throughout the winter months.

In addition to the dedicated warming centres, all six County of Simcoe Social and Community Services offices remained open during business hours, offering indoor refuge for people needing relief from the cold. Those locations will continue to provide shelter from extreme heat and inclement weather during the summer months.

Looking Ahead

With the winter program now concluded, county staff will begin evaluating this year's response and preparing for next season, to ensure residents continue to have access to safe indoor spaces when temperatures drop once again.
