Cruiser damaged during shoplifting investigation in Orillia

Police say the getaway vehicle used by the suspects was stolen

Two men have been charged in connection with a shoplifting incident at an Orillia business that also resulted in damage to an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) cruiser.

Police say just before 6 p.m. on Sunday, they were contacted about a theft in progress from a business in the area of Monarch Drive. With the assistance of store staff, officers were able to locate two individuals who fled from the parking lot in a vehicle. As police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver struck the cruiser causing significant damage to both vehicles. Police say the vehicle being used by the suspects was stolen and had stolen licence plates.

As a result of the investigation, two people have been charged.

A 24-year-old Brampton man has been charged with:

·      Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon

·      Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000

·      Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000

·      Dangerous Operation

·      Theft Under $5000- Shoplifting

·      Failure to Comply with Release Order- Other Than to Attend Court - Three counts

A 24-year-old North York man has been charged with:

·      Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000

·      Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000

·      Theft Under $5000- Shoplifting

Both individuals were held for bail and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie, on January 27, 2023.
