The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in
Damage pegged at around half-million in Barrie townhouse blaze

The Ontario Fire Marshal is probing the cause of a fire at a Black Cherry Crescent townhouse that Barrie police say is being investigated as arson.

Firefighters were called to the west-end neighbourhood in the area of Mapleview Drive and Essa Road around 11 p.m. on Thursday.

Deputy Fire Chief Carrie Clark told Barrie 360 the blaze started in the garage and made its way to the second floor of the residence.

There was also damage to a neighbouring townhouse.

Police communications spokesperson Peter Leon told Barrie 360 they have identified a 39-year-old woman of no fixed address as a suspect and are in the process of taking out a warrant for her arrest.

Leon said the occupants of the townhouse where the fire started and the suspect are known to each other but added he could not get into the details.

Nobody was injured in the fire.

Fire crews were able to rescue several pets.

The damage to both townhouses in total is about half a million dollars.
