A power failure at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre’s data centre led to telecommunications issues throughout the hospital on Thursday.
The failure within the data centre Thursday morning resulted in a disruption of the hospital’s information technology services, impacting access to information and communication. Things like email, phone and health information systems were impacted.
“RVH quickly enacted its ‘downtime protocols’ which includes deployment of radios throughout the facility and introduction of manual processes,” says Janice Skot, RVH president and CEO. “RVH has very well-defined policies and procedures in place in the event of disruptions to the network and these have been implemented including a manual process for patient’s medical records. We continue to closely monitor the situation with the focus remaining on the safety of our patients. Another update will be provided as soon as more information is available.”
The malfunction resulted in some service delays and extended wait times. Urgent emergency services, including surgeries, were not impacted by the system disruptions.
Although the systems were being restored as of late Thursday afternoon, some disruptions continued to occur and there was no estimated time for system restoration.
