Dog alerts sleeping family about house fire in Loretto

Damage is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars

A pet dog rather than smoke alarms alerted a sleeping family about a fire at a home on Simon Drive in Loretto early Sunday morning.

Adjala-Tosoronto Fire Chief John Krayetski said the dog was restless and awoke the occupants who were able to get out of the residence safely. He said they discovered the fire upon leaving the home, which was burning at the rear deck and inside the ceiling, and when the family exited the residence the smoke alarms sounded.

Several neighbouring fire departments helped crews battle the flames. There were no injuries. Damage is pegged at over $400,000. The Ontario Fire Marshal is assisting with the investigation into the cause of the blaze.
