Barrie police say a motorist they clocked speeding on Big Bay Point Road was allegedly impaired and only stopped when they encountered oncoming traffic.
When the sport utility vehicle was spotted just before midnight Saturday, police said the SUV had no headlights on and was forced to stop on Bayview Drive due to oncoming traffic he was approaching.
"Bayview Drive, north of Big Bay Point Road, is restricted to southbound traffic only due to ongoing construction," a police news release stated.
"The investigating officer observed signs of impairment and arrested the driver. At Barrie Police Headquarters, a qualified breathalyzer technician confirmed that the male was almost four times over the legal limit."
A 38-year-old Barrie man was charged with impaired driving, operating a vehicle without insurance, and a number of Highway Traffic Act charges related to his driving behaviour.
The accused also had his driver's licence suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle has been impounded for seven days.
