Drug charge laid following suspicious fire on outskirts of Barrie

Suspect had nothing to do with the fire itself, but police say he had some fentanyl on him

Someone was taken into custody following a suspicious fire in the city’s south end, but not for reasons you’d think.

The Barrie Fire Service and Barrie Police Service were called to a structure fire on McKay Road near 10th Sideroad Thursday morning with reports of a fire. The home was abandoned and the blaze was knocked down in short order.

Officers on the scene were directed by witnesses to a man nearby who was allegedly seen leaving the scene at the time of the fire. While investigators were able to determine he had nothing to do with the fire itself, they say he was in possession of a quantity of fentanyl.

The 42-year-old suspect was charged with possession, while police continue to investigate a fire they’ve since deemed a case of arson.
