A driver left a Barrie police officer in the dust, kicking up a bunch as he was seen exiting from a driveway at a high rate of speed in the area of Huronia Road around 7:30 Wednesday night.

Police say the motorist also got into a verbal interaction with a cyclist at a red light, again witnessed by the same officer, who pulled over the driver near the intersection of Yonge Street and Huronia Road.

The driver, who showed signs of impairment, registered a fail on a screening device test, police said in a news release.

He was taken to Barrie Police Headquarters for further testing, where it was determined the driver was three times the legal limit of alcohol.

The 20-year-old from Minesing was charged with impaired driving, having cannabis readily available in a vehicle, failing to have an insurance card, and failing to surrender a permit for the vehicle.

His driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle has been suspended for seven days.

The accused has a court date later this month.
