Essa Road/Highway 400 bridge demolition

The Essa Road bridge at Highway 400 was demolished by construction crews overnight.

This was necessary as the Ontario Ministry of Transportation is continuing work on a constructing a new interchange at Essa Road and Highway 400.

Essa Road was to remain closed between Fairview Road and Ardagh Road until 10 a.m. Sunday.

During that time, the ramp for westbound Essa Road to southbound Highway 400 will also be closed.

According to the City of Barrie, the Essa Road Interchange/Highway 400 Overpass Replacement project includes a new bridge, along with widening Essa Road to six lanes between Fairview Road and Bryne Drive/Ardagh Road. The work will also add a multi-use path on the north side of the road, and a sidewalk on the south side. The project is expected to be complete in late 2025.

For more information on this project, visit the City’s webpage about this MTO project: Essa Road Interchange & Highway 400 Overpass Replacement.
