Barrie police took notice of what they say was a pickup truck travelling with expired licence plates in the area of Dunlop Street near the Five Points intersection around 3 a.m. on Thursday.

"A traffic stop was conducted, and police detected obvious signs of impairment. An alcohol screening device was utilized, and the driver registered a fail. The 32-year-old male driver from Barrie was arrested for Drive Over .80mgs and transported to Barrie Police Headquarters for further investigation," police said in a news release on Friday afternoon.

The man provided breath samples and police said the tests confirmed his ability operate a vehicle was impaired by alcohol.

In addition to the drunk driving charge, police said the man was charged with operating a vehicle without insurance, being a novice driver and not have a valid licence permit.

He has a court date later this month.
