Local Fire and Emergency Services are teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association to mark Fire Prevention Week, October 5–11, 2025. This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” focuses on how to safely buy, charge, and recycle the rechargeable batteries found in everyday devices.

From smartphones and laptops to e-bikes and lawn tools, lithium-ion batteries power much of modern life—but when damaged or misused, they can overheat, catch fire, or even explode.

“Lithium-ion batteries are powerful, convenient, and they’re just about everywhere,” said BWG Fire Chief Michael Rozario. “This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign helps people understand the importance of using these batteries correctly to prevent fires in the home and to follow the Buy, Charge, and Recycle Safely approach.”

Barrie Fire Chief Kevin White added, “Our message is simple: by charging smart and staying alert, we can prevent fires before they start and keep our loved ones safe.”

BWG Fire Battery Recycling Drive and Safety Tips

From October 6 to 24, BWG Fire will collect single-use and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries to help residents dispose of them safely. Residents are encouraged to follow the Buy, Charge, and Recycle Safely approach:

Buy Only Listed Products

  • Look for a stamp from a nationally recognized testing lab.
  • Avoid unverified products sold online or in stores.

Charge Devices Safely

  • Use the original charger and follow manufacturer instructions.
  • Charge on hard surfaces—never on beds, couches, or under pillows.
  • Unplug or remove batteries once fully charged.

Recycle Responsibly

  • Never toss lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins.
  • Use designated battery recycling locations.

Stay Connected

Both fire departments will be sharing tips and resources on social media throughout Fire Prevention Week. Follow along to learn how to protect your home and family from battery-related fire risks.
