Families across Barrie will be thrilled to hear that Hot Summer Night is making its return on Thursday, July 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sunnidale Park. The event hosted, by Barrie Fire Service, promises water-fuelled fun with a powerful fire safety message.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity to come out and engage with the members of our fire service,” said Kate Foster, public educator with the Barrie Fire Service. “We also bring out a truck, connect our hoses, spray some water—and the kiddos usually have a great time running around.”

The evening offers hands-on activities that reinforce essential fire safety lessons in ways children—and grown-ups—won’t forget. Interactive stations will feature everything from a mini combat course and fire hose target practice to stop-drop-and-roll drills.

And yes, everything is free.

Foster says these playful experiences are designed to stick. “They (kids) really are our greatest ambassadors when it comes to our fire safety messaging,” she said. “When they go home, they become almost junior fire chiefs themselves.”

A passport-style activity guiding visitors through critical fire safety stations will have everyone walking away informed and empowered. Messaging includes reminders to test smoke alarms monthly and to practice home escape plans—two habits Foster says are “essential to being safe in our spaces.”

Parents, guardians, and even grandparents can expect more than just waterworks and squeals of delight. The event serves as a gentle wake-up call for adults, too—many find themselves learning a few safety steps they hadn’t known before.

If the forecast calls for sweltering heat, don’t sweat it. Getting soaked by a pumper truck is part of the fun—and part of the lesson.

The evening brings together learning and laughter, leaving families safer and closer. It’s not just a splashy summer night out—it’s a community-powered reminder that fire safety begins at home.
