Georgian College's Centre of Industrial Simulation and Prototyping has received $1 million of federal funding to help expand its applied research footprint.

The funding comes from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is part of nearly $134 million in research infrastructure funding announced Friday by the Government of Canada.

The CFI supporting projects at 63 postsecondary institutions across the country, and is aimed at "developing technology solutions that address the social, business, and environmental needs of Canadian industry and communities," according to a Georgian College media release.

“By equipping universities and colleges with the cutting-edge research tools that underpin innovation, we help ensure Canada remains secure, productive and globally competitive,” President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation Sylvain Charbonneau said in the release.

This investment comes nearly three months after Georgian was designated a Technology Access Centre by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Georgian's mission is to use this funding to further the abilities and efficiency of Ontario manufacturers.

“This CFI funding will enable Georgian to help local companies adopt transformative technologies that improve productivity and resilience. It also allows our students to learn alongside industry partners, developing the skills they’ll need to lead in a rapidly changing manufacturing landscape," said Georgian College Innovation and Entrepreneurship Director of Research Dr. Mira Ray said in a news release.

Georgian says the funding will allow the college to acquire advanced digital-simulation software and flexible manufacturing modules. The new tools would help link virtual modelling with real-world prototyping and testing.

“This investment recognizes Georgian’s leadership in applied research and its role in driving Ontario’s manufacturing future, Georgian College President and CEO Kevin Weaver said in a news release. "By integrating advanced digital simulation and hands-on prototyping, we’re giving industry partners a powerful environment to innovate, train, and grow."
