Giorgio Mammoliti, an outspoken former Toronto city councillor and member of the Ontario legislature, has died at 64.
His son Chris Mammoliti confirmed the news to The Canadian Press on Wednesday, saying his father was surrounded by family members when he died.
"We are obviously devastated and are left with a tremendous void," he wrote in a statement. "Dad loved his family, his community and our beautiful city."
The family is asking for privacy as they grieve, he wrote.
Mammoliti served as an NDP member of provincial parliament from 1990 to 1995, sat on city council from 2000 to 2018 and twice ran for Toronto mayor, as well as Wasaga Beach mayor in 2022.

He also unsuccessfully ran for the People's Party of Canada in last year's federal election to represent the riding of Simcoe-Grey, northwest of Toronto.
PPC Leader Maxime Bernier said he was saddened by the news, calling Mammoliti a politician who was driven by his "dedication to the people he represented" rather than party ideology.
"He was known as a principled man who was willing to stand apart from his own party to serve his constituents' interests when he believed it was necessary," Bernier said in a statement.
Toronto city councillor Mike Colle said in a social media post that Mammoliti was "fighting for his life" at Sunnybrook hospital before he died.
"Condolences to his family and friends and may Giorgio's memory be an eternal blessing," he wrote.
Coun. James Pasternak remembered Mammoliti for his dedication and outspokenness.
"He was very dedicated to public service and always treated me with the utmost respect," he wrote in a social media post. "I enjoyed his humour, energy and passion to speak his mind."
During his time on city council, Mammoliti was a member of late mayor Rob Ford's executive committee and known for controversial comments and proposals that included setting up a red-light district on Toronto Island.
Donna Skelly, the Speaker of Ontario's legislative assembly, has also offered her condolences to Mammoliti's family and friends.
