Provincial police have laid charges in a hockey association fraud case in Essa Township.

Nottawasaga OPP began an investigation on May 14, following a report from a local minor hockey association regarding a substantial financial discrepancy.

According to police, the association's executive team identified that approximately $77,299 was missing from its operational account.

"Through internal efforts, the association was able to recover $54,000 from a former board member," police said in a news release.

As a result of their investigation, police say an individual within the organization responsible for managing a portion of the association's funds allegedly committed fraud.

A 33-year-old from New Brunswick has been charged with fraud over $5000 and criminal breach of trust.

The accused has a court date in November.
