Batter up!

Members of the Barrie Baycats and local celebrities will take part in the third annual Home Runs for the Hungry baseball game on Saturday, May 3, at Athletic Kulture Stadium in support of the Barrie Food Bank.

Barrie Baycats President Josh Matlow says he was excited when the fundraiser was first proposed to him by Ward 2 Coun. Craig Nixon

"It's what I signed up for," Matlow told Barrie 360. "I want to be a part of the community and make an impact where we can."

The price is right for the public. Tickets are $10, and kids 12 and under are free.

Nixon says it will be a fun afternoon while creating awareness about the food bank.

The Barrie Food Bank currently serves 7,000 individuals each month, with a record number of first-time clients, seniors, large families, and individuals seeking emergency support.

Nixon believes the ice storm made it worse for families in need, as many people had to throw out food from their fridges and freezers due to power outages.

In year one of the event, Matlow says they raised over $8,000, and that soared to more than $30,000 in 2024.

Those taking part in the charity game include Matt "Millzy" Miller, evening host and digital producer from 107.5 KOOL FM, Bryan Flannery, Rock 95 morning show host, Barrie Fire Chief Kevin White, Deputy Barrie Police Chief Rob Burke, Robert Thompson, Ward 5 councillor and Deputy Mayor, Barrie wrestling star Nova, and others.

"We kind of make the teams up 15 minutes before the game," said Nixon. "At the end of the day, they're all on the same team, which is team food bank."

Game time is 1 p.m.

Should poor weather force a cancellation of the game, the replacement date will be Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m.
