Several people left homeless by fire in Midland apartment

Midland firefighters battled a blaze in a second floor apartment above a commercial property on King Street.

Crews were called to the scene around 10:30 Tuesday night.

The flames were contained to the second floor, though Midland Fire Chief Richard Renaud told Barrie 360 that there was extensive damage to the building including water damage to a first-floor business.

Renaud added that Penetanguishene fire sent several apparatus to assist.

"The building department will be contacted to assess the structural stability of the building," Renaud stated in an email.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the Ontario Fire Marshal has been contacted.

There is no damage total available.

The intersection of King Street and Fire Street was closed for several hours.
