(Update) Human remains found near Anne and Tiffin Streets in Barrie sent for identification

Barrie Police say skeletal remains that were discovered Thursday afternoon in the area of Anne Street South and Tiffin Street have been sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto for identificaiton.

Police were alerted about the remains around 12:30 p.m.

Yellow police tape stretches alongside a field on the north side of Tiffin Street and the east side of Anne Street South. There is also access to a wooded area from the field with homes backing onto it from Innisfil Street, and Dyment Creek runs through the property.

"The OPP Urban Containment Rescue Team will be assisting in the search for additional evidence within the water," Barrie Police said in a news release on Friday morning.

Police said they are treating the discovery of the remains as a separate incident, noting the location is not far from a double homicide last summer at a former homeless encampment on Anne Street South between Brock and John Streets.

"If detectives make any connection to another investigation, those details will be shared when possible," police added.

Police said it's very early in the investigation and it would be inappropriate to make assumptions about the nature of the remains.

The Barrie Police Major Crime Unit has now taken over the investigation.

Yellow police tape is wrapped around a wooded area near Tiffin Street and Anne Street South in Barrie as police confirmed the discovery of human remains on Thursday afternoon.

"Investigators are working to determine the nature of the remains," police posted on social media.

More information will be shared as it becomes available, police said.
