Human remains found near Springwater cemetery determined to be “historical in nature”

Dog discovered a human bone while playing on August 1

Police say some human remains found in Springwater over the long weekend were there for a while.

Shortly before 9 p.m. on August 1, a bone was discovered near the St. James Cemetery on Penetanguishene Road by a dog being exercised in a nearby field. The bone was determined by a forensic anthropologist to be human, and a search by OPP investigators turned up a second bone.

Since the discovery, both bones have been determined to be historical in nature, and the matter has been turned over to the Bereavement Authority of Ontario. Police say there is no threat to public safety as a result of this discovery.
