Innisfil declares May 5 World Maternal Mental Health Day

One in five new mothers experiences some type of perinatal mood and anxiety disorder
Canadian study suggests COVID-19 during pregnancy means 10 times higher risk of ICU admission

Unnoticed and often untreated, the Town of Innisfil is shedding light on maternal mental health today.

One in five new mothers experiences some type of perinatal mood and anxiety disorder that can have tragic and long-term consequences, not just for the mother, but for her child as well.

Symptoms can appear anytime during pregnancy and through the first 12 months after giving birth. Yet, despite there being treatment options, many are not getting the help they need.

The Town of Innisfil hopes mental health professionals, friends and relatives of new moms will reach out and ask them how they are feeling and encourage them to seek help if needed.
