With significant snowfall this winter, the Town of Innisfil reminds residents to take proactive measures against flooding to help protect people and property.

Over the next couple of days, heavy rain and warmer temperatures are expected, which make localized flooding in low-lying areas and water pooling on roads possible. The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb rainfall and snowmelt.

In preparation for the spring thaw, Town staff have been removing snow in areas throughout town with limited drainage, clearing snow and ice from culverts and catch basins to help water flow, and ensuring pumping equipment is available if required.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take precautions to mitigate the potential risk of flooding, especially in flood-prone areas.

  1. Clear Culverts: Regularly clear debris from your property's culverts and ditches to facilitate better drainage.
  2. Check Sump Pumps: Test sump pumps and consider installing a back-up power system such as a battery back-up or generator.
  3. Exercise Caution: Exercise extra caution around ditches and waterways, which may experience faster and deeper flows than usual. Prioritize safety at all times.
  4. Stock Up: Prepare by stocking up on essential supplies to ensure you and your family are adequately provisioned in case water levels around your home and street make access difficult.
