Good intentions, dangerous move.

South Simcoe Police say a routine traffic stop in Innisfil was followed by an unexpected--and potentially alarming--encounter.

After completing the stop on Friday, police say a citizen approached an officer holding a black pistol, which turned out to be a defective air pistol.

The interaction was handled safely.

Police say the person was trying to surrender the air pistol for destruction.

Even so, police are stressing the danger of the situation.

"Realistic-looking firearms and replicas should never be brought directly to officers in public," SSP stated on social media. "If you need to turn in a firearm, air pistol, pellet gun, BB gun, or imitation weapon, police say call the non-emergency line first, explain what you have and where it is, and wait for instructions on how it will be collected. Do not bring weapons — real or imitation — to traffic stops, active scenes, or approach officers with them in hand. If taking one to a station, leave it secured in your vehicle and wait for direction."

Police say they appreciate people trying to do the right thing, but a quick phone call keeps everyone safe.
