Budding music sensation JULES IS DEAD is making waves in the music scene with a unique sound and compelling lyrics. At just 18 years old, this up-and-coming non-binary artist of colour has already secured a deal with Atlantic Records/TAG Music, reflecting the meteoric rise of their career. They sat down with us to discuss their journey, influences, and what's next.

The Beginning

JULES IS DEAD, gained initial traction through a TikTok presence, and was once part of a Riot grrrl band. Their big break came when Midtown and Cobra Starship’s frontman, Gabe Saporta, discovered their talent and scheduled a Zoom call. However, fate had other plans, as the band imploded on the day of the meeting. Undeterred, Jules seized the opportunity and flew to LA with their parents to meet Saporta.

“We spent four days writing four songs, and on the fifth day, we showed the songs to Atlantic Records. They wanted to sign me, and now I'm under Tag [Music],” Jules recounted with excitement.

Balancing Act

Navigating the music industry while still in high school has been a challenging yet rewarding experience for Jules. “It’s been a lot, especially during grade 11, while trying to maintain friendships and finish my courses.” Despite the stress, Jules remains enthusiastic and committed to their passion.

Musical Influences and Support

Growing up in a musically inclined family, Jules was influenced by dad’s taste in Radiohead and U2, and mom’s love for jazz and pop music. This eclectic background has shaped their musical style, which is described as an outlet for emotions. “Songs can be really empowering and allow you to express things that are hard to put into words.”

From Rock Band to Real Guitar

The COVID-19 lockdown led Jules to rediscover the Rock Band and Guitar Hero video games in the basement. This sparked an interest in real instruments. “I ended up being really good at the fake rock band guitar and decided to buy a real one. It took a while to master, but eventually, it all clicked.”

Creating Dark, Resonant Music

JULES IS DEAD’s music often delves into dark themes, reflecting personal experiences and mental health. Jules channels their emotions into song, creating a raw and relatable body of work. “It’s a good way to get out all my negative emotions in a healthy manner.”

Exciting Times Ahead

JULES IS DEAD performs at the Queen’s Hotel on July 12, a significant milestone as it coincides with the release of a new single, "Eternally (undeath)." This will be their first time playing in Barrie. “We have a lot of fun covers and new songs for our hour-long setlist.”

Beyond the Queen’s Hotel, the band has several upcoming performances, including Sneaky Dee's in Toronto on July 27 and the Vaughan International Music Festival on August 24. JULES IS DEAD is particularly thrilled to open for The Warning at the Danforth Music Hall on October 30.

Looking Forward

With five mastered tracks and numerous demos in the pipeline, the creative process is in full swing. “We’re planning all the releases for this year, and it’s going to be song after song until the year’s out.”

Despite the occasional negativity on social media, JULES IS DEAD remains focused on the positive feedback and the support of fans. “More positive than negative,” Jules affirmed. “I aspire to create music that resonates with people, just as my favourite bands have done for me.”

As JULES IS DEAD continues to rise in the music world, the journey serves as an inspiration to young artists everywhere. Their story is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and the belief that dreams can become reality with hard work and dedication.
