Mom pleads guilty in drowning death of her little boy who was swept away in Grand River

Sentencing is set for January

The story tugged at the public’s heartstrings.

Kaden Young was three-years-old in February 2018 when the minivan he was in with his mom went through a closed road sign and into the raging Grand River near Orangeville, and he was swept away.

Via video in court on Tuesday, Kaden’s mother, 38-year-old Michelle Hanson, pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death.

Hanson was able to get her son out of his car seat but lost her grip on him in the water.

The child’s body was found two months later.

In an agreed statement of facts read in court today, Hanson took her son out for a drive around 1 a.m. on the night of his death because he couldn’t sleep.

Hanson had alcohol and therapeutic amounts of oxycodone in her blood.

The Crown noted a toxicologist was unable to provide evidence of impairment.

Sentencing will take place Jan. 18, 2022
