The guitar that Kurt Cobain played in the 1991 music video “Smells Like Teen Spirit” has sold for an astounding $5.8 million U.S

The blue and white left-handed 1969 Fender Mustang was part of a bidding war that saw the price skyrocket to well above what was estimated.

Julien’s auction thought it would bring in around $600 thousand.

It now belongs to Jim Irsay, the owner of the Indianapolis Colts.

Reports say Irsay is an avid guitar collector, with his collection including the instruments of Elvis Presley, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and Prince.

Even though the sale is massive, it’s still not the most one of Cobain’s guitars has fetched.

In 2020, his acoustic 1959 Martin D-18E was sold at auction for 7.7 million U.S.
