Local and Provincial COVID-19 numbers as of Monday, Jan. 17, 2022

Province updates its numbers daily except holidays, the SMDHU does so Monday to Friday

Your main takeaways today:
On Monday, the province reported 3,887 (3,559 on Sunday) people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario. Of those, 579 (578 on Sunday) are in the intensive care unit. Not all hospitals report data on weekends. According to the Ministry of Health, 53 per cent of people were admitted to the hospital with the virus and 47 per cent were admitted for other reasons but have since tested positive for the virus. Of those in the ICU, 78.2 per cent were admitted for the virus and 21.8 per cent were admitted for other reasons. There were 23 more virus-related deaths.

Officials say case counts are an underestimate of the true number of infections in Ontario due to changes in the availability of testing.
