Local health unit reminding those who got their first COVID shot prior to March 10 that their second dose appointment will be rebooked

Expect word in May on how to rebook your second dose appointment

A reminder from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) on Friday: those who got their shot before March 10 will have to rebook that second dose.

The SMDHU said on Friday that second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine will be given sixteen weeks out instead of the four weeks first anticipated. This comes following advice from Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization that says second doses can be given up to four months following the first.

Officials say the first dose of the vaccine provides immediate protection against COVID-19, and to allow more people to reap the benefit of that protection, the duration between doses has been lengthened.

Those who had their shot prior to March 10 will learn more information about how to book a second shot in early May.
