The rumour has re-surfaced on Reddit recently, and according to posters, the different colours represent their preferences.

This rumour has been around for several years, and has become folklore in the outlying communities.
Then again, it is just a rumour. One person on Reddit who works at "The Villages" hopped on with a far more reasonable explanation: so they can find their car in a bust parking lot.
"All the retirees drive a similar car, and old gran can't go around the whole parking lot looking for her car. So the loofa is an easy way for them to spot it from a distance. Trust me all the people I have met are definitely not swingers as most can barely stand without assistance." they explained.
