Ice, ice, maybe.
By 2021, that is.
A malfunction with the Thornton Arena’s refrigeration system means there will be no ice for the upcoming winter season. While there is no threat to anyone nearby, township staff are working with a hazardous waste company to safely remove contaminated materials from the system.
It is hoped the task will take 14 weeks, with an anticipated reopening in January, 2021.
“Council understands how important sports and hockey are to our youth and knows that this will be a real disappointment to the community, as everyone was looking forward to returning to the arena for the winter season,” said Mayor Sandie Macdonald.
This leaves the township with one functioning arena, in Angus. Township staff are working to balance the needs of all users as they complete ice scheduling for the facility.
