Man accused of attacking a York Regional Police officer charged with attempted murder

The suspect allegedly beat the officer with his own baton

A York Regional Police officer is in hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries after an apparent unprovoked attack in the parking lot of Hillcrest Mall in Richmond Hill on Friday afternoon.

Police said a man approached the officer who was sitting in his cruiser and began to assault him.

The attack spilled outside the car and the man allegedly grabbed the officer’s baton and continued the attack.

The suspect eventually walked away but was located by police and arrested.

A 22 year old of no fixed address has been charged with attempted murder and fail to comply with recognizance.
