The City of Orillia is warning residents about a scam involving someone pretending to be a bylaw officer.

Officials say a resident was recently approached at home by a person claiming to be a bylaw officer and was asked to provide money upfront for an alleged violation related to tall grass and weeds.

Residents need to know that City of Orillia bylaw officers will never ask for money at your door to cover fines or penalty payments.

"Any legitimate fines or penalties issued through the city must be paid through official channels, including at the Orillia City Centre (50 Andrew St. S.), online via payticket.ca, or by mail

To identify a city bylaw officer, they wear blue uniforms with the official logo and carry city-issued identification badges, which they will show if asked.

If a resident is approached by someone claiming to be a bylaw officer and requesting immediate payment, they should call the Ontario Provincial Police non-emergency line at 188-310-1122.

“Public safety is our top priority, and we want residents to be cautious and informed,” said Shawn Crawford, Director of Legislative, Building, Parking, and Transit Services. “City bylaw officers are always identifiable and follow proper protocols. If something feels off, trust your instincts and report it.”
