Man who shot himself following standoff with police in Penetanguishene has died: SIU

SIU invokes mandate in fatal Tiny Township crash

A man that the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says shot himself following a standoff with police in Penetanguishene has died.

"On September 4, 2023, while in hospital, the man succumbed to his injury and was pronounced deceased," the SIU said in a news release on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old, according to the SIU, barricaded himself in an RV on a property in the area of Laurier Road on Aug. 31, when Halton Regional Police officers arrived at the property to execute search warrants.

"Ontario Provincial Police Tactical Unit officers and a negotiator also attended. At approximately 9:30 p.m., OPP officers deployed pepper spray into the RV. The man exited the RV and was observed to have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to hospital," the SIU stated.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator with the SIU continue to investigate this incident. At this time, one subject official and three witness officials have been designated.

The SIU investigates matters involving police in which someone is killed or injured.
