Southern Georgian Bay OPP charged a driver with impaired driving following a traffic stop Tuesday evening in Midland.

Around 9:45 p.m., an officer stopped a pickup truck after it was seen speeding and driving unsafely on snowy streets on Simcoe County Road 93 and on Vindin Street.

Police say an investigating officer detected an odour of alcohol while speaking with the driver, who later registered a "fail" on a roadside alcohol screening device.

The 50-year-old male driver from Tiny was arrested and brough back to the detachment for further testing. He is facing charges of impaired operation, and operation with blood alcohol content above 80 milligrams per litre.

He was released on an undertaking and is set to appear in a Midland court on March 12.

His licence was suspended for 90 days and vehicle impounded for seven days.

"Impaired driving continues to be one of the leading causes of serious collisions and fatalities on Ontario roadways," Southern Georgian Bay OPP said in a news release. "If you consume alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs, please plan a safe ride home."
