OPP say a man who threatened others with a chainsaw and an axe was arrested after an 11-hour standoff in Midland.
The ordeal began on Tuesday around 1:30 p.m. when Southern Georgian Bay OPP were called to a home on Everton Road.
"Officers learned that a dispute had occurred inside the residence where a suspect was wielding an axe, then a running chainsaw in a threatening manner towards others," police wrote in a media release.
They say the occupants got out of the home, leaving the suspect inside.
"Officers communicated with the suspect, however, they were unsuccessful in convincing them to exit the residence," police say. "In the interest of public safety, traffic was restricted on Everton Road and nearby residents were asked to shelter in their homes as officers continued efforts to resolve the situation."
The OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT), the Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU), the Canine Unit, and Crisis Negotiators responded to assist.
OPP say they entered the home just after midnight and arrested the suspect without injury.
"Weapons believed to be used during the incident were located during a search and seized," police added.
A 62-year-old from Midland was charged with the following:
- Assault with a Weapon x 2
- Utter Threats - Cause Death or Bodily Harm x 2
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
He was held in custody pending a bail hearing today.
