Mississauga man dies after canoe overturns in Stewart Lake in Mactier

A 31-year-old Mississauga man has died after a canoe overturned on Stewart Lake in Mactier, located in Georgian Bay Township.

Bracebridge OPP were called to the lake shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday after reports that a canoe had capsized.

Police say two people were canoeing about 40 feet from shore when the canoe overturned. One person was rescued by a passing boater, while the other went underwater and did not resurface.

Bracebridge OPP, Muskoka Lakes Fire Department and other emergency responders searched the area, with the OPP's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit brought in to assist.

The missing man was found dead Sunday.

The investigation is continuing in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
