Mock scenario on Lake Simcoe had local first responders acting like it was the real thing

Emergency responders from around the region descended on Lake Simcoe Wednesday morning, in an effort to locate a kayaker that had been struck by a boat.

There was never a kayaker, there was never a boat, the whole scenario was made up.

As part of a joint rescue training exercise, the Ontario Provincial Police were joined by Barrie Police, South Simcoe Police, Rama Fire, Ramara Fire, Orillia Fire, and the Canadian Coast Guard in testing out how they mesh together. A scenario was created in which 911 dispatchers were told a kayaker was struck by a passing motorized vessel, and could not be located.

The search began on Lake Couchiching and progressed south into Lake Simcoe from there. A mannequin was used as the “victim” in the scenario, and was rescued several times over the course of the exercise.
