Closure of movie theatres in Ontario results in nearly 5,000 layoffs at Cineplex

Movie theatres were closed in response to the surge of the Omicron variant

Nearly 5,000 part-time employees with Cineplex Inc have been temporarily laid off.

The company says this is a result of the mandated closures of its 67 Ontario movie theatres in response to the surge of the Omicron variant.

On Monday, Premier Doug Ford announced new restrictions with resulted in the closure of movie theatres, galleries, museums, concert venues and other attractions.

Restaurants and bars cannot offer indoor dining and alcohol sales must stop after 10 p.m.

The policies introduced to try and curb the spread of COVID-19 are expected to remain in place until Jan. 26.

Customers who booked tickets in advance will be offered a full fund, Cineplex said.
