A long-awaited MRI machine arrived this week at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital (CGMH). It marks a turning point for thousands of South Georgian Bay residents, who will soon have access to advanced diagnostic imaging—without leaving town.
Slated to become operational this fall, the MRI suite is part of CGMH’s broader strategic push to expand services in step with the region’s rapid growth. Currently, more than 11,000 area residents must travel outside the region each year for MRI scans. That burden will soon be lifted.
“With more than 11,000 local residents leaving the area each year for MRI scans, our new MRI machine represents a major step forward in improving access to care,” said Michael Lacroix, CGMH President and CEO. “It will enhance the patient experience, support better outcomes, and ensure that our community receives the high-quality care it needs—right here at home.”
The MRI suite, now under construction on CGMH’s lower level, will occupy 2,000 square feet of renovated space. Once completed, it will provide modern diagnostic capabilities that not only meet today’s urgent needs, but lay the groundwork for CGMH’s future—a new hospital with expanded imaging services.
What’s powering this progress? A combination of provincial support and local heart.
Over $5 million was raised through the CGMH Foundation, fuelled by generous donations from the South Georgian Bay community and matched by funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health.
Final installation, testing, and commissioning are underway. A specialized team of MRI technologists and radiology professionals will ensure the unit is fully ready to deliver safe, high-quality care.
As CGMH continues building capacity, this achievement reflects a community united by care and compassion. And for patients in Collingwood and beyond, it means less travel, quicker diagnoses, and treatment that feels just a little more personal.
