Multi-vehicle crash after driver runs red light, impaired charges laid: BPS

Barrie crash

A Barrie man faces impaired charges after a multi-vehicle crash over the weekend, with city police saying he ran a red light.

Barrie police responded to the intersection of Dunlop and Anne Streets on Sunday just after 9:00 a.m.

"Police located three motor vehicles that had been involved in the collision and from the investigation that followed, it has been determined that a westbound sport utility vehicle had disobeyed a red light and struck a northbound car," officers wrote in a release on Monday morning.

"The resulting collision caused the northbound car to careen into a van that was also travelling through the intersection. The driver of the van was transported to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury."

Officers say the westbound driver was showing signs of impairment and failed a roadside alcohol test.

"He was subsequently arrested and taken to Barrie Police Headquarters where suitable samples of his breath were provided to a qualified breathalyzer operator which confirmed that he was operating his motor vehicle in excess of the legal limit," police said.

"A 34-year-old male from Barrie has been charged with Drive Over .80mgs and has also received three, Part 3 summons for Highway Traffic Act and a Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act offence."

Officers added that he has been issued a 90-day driver’s licence suspension and his vehicle has been impounded for 7 days.

He was released and is scheduled to appear in Barrie court in February.
