Muskoka forest fire danger rating high as dry, warm spell continues

"Some Muskoka FDs have already responded to out-of-control grass fires this week," according to a tweet from Gravenhurst Fire Service

The warm spell is a bonus, but it comes with a hazard.

The fire danger rating in Muskoka is now listed as high.

"Areas without snow have rapidly dried, and the trend will continue with the forecasted weather," Gravenhurst Fire Service said in a tweet on Thursday. "Some Muskoka FDs have already responded to out-of-control grass fires this week. A small fire can become a large one within minutes with these conditions."

Firefighters from Foot's Bay, Glen Orchard and Bala were called to a grass fire in Wahta Mohawk territory on Highway 400 Wednesday night.

According to Muskoka Lakes Fire Service, crews were on the scene with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and Georgian Bay Fire Department extinguishing "this stubborn hard to access fire."
