The National Hockey League is moving into Phase 3 of its Return to Play Plan.
The National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and the National Hockey League (NHL) announced on Thursday that formal training camps, for the 24 teams resuming play, will open on Friday, July 10.
When the season officially resumes, the NHL will go with a 24-team playoff system.
The league based its seedings on each team’s points percentage as of March 11, when the NHL season shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The format gives the top four teams in each conference an automatic berth in the first round.
The remaining eight teams in each conference will play a best-of-five “qualifying round” series to determine which teams advance to the first round of the playoffs.
The league hasn’t yet provided a formal start date for the resumption of play. Several NHL teams have already opened their facilities.
The Toronto Maple Leafs began holding group workouts on Monday.
