No joke. Comedian wins Ukraine presidential runoff

It was a landslide

If they say Ukraine’s new government is a joke, they may be right.

Comedian Volodomyr Zelenskiy is projected to win the presidential runoff vote in a landslide.

As of first thing Monday he had 73 percent of the vote with 96 percent of the ballots counted. Incumbent President Petro Poroshenko had just 24% support.

Up until now, Zelenskiy has only played the president in a TV sitcom.

He has promised to step up efforts to re-integrate the east back into Ukraine’s fold but has offered no details on how he is going to do that. Ukraine has been torn by bitter debates over its identity as well as the separatist conflict in the east that is fueled by neighbouring Russia.
