Put away your lawn mower and let your grass grow during the month of May.
The Township of Springwater will be participating in the ‘No Mow May’ initiative, which aims to help pollinators such as honeybees and bumblebees by allowing wildflowers and other plants to flourish.
On March 1, 2023, Springwater Council approved a pilot project to allow residents
and businesses to let their lawns grow through the waiving of Section 4.1 (d) of the
Clean, Safe, Properties By-law from May 1-31, 2023.
The goal of No Mow May is to pause mowing during the month of May, allowing flowers
and weeds to bloom in early spring, when food sources are limited for local pollinators. In addition to increasing food sources for pollinators, not mowing in May also prevents disturbing insects and amphibians that may be burrowed or hiding in leaves and lawns.
To support the pilot project, the Springwater Parks, Recreation and Facilities team will
be evaluating Township parkland and open spaces to determine which properties may
be a good fit for the program.
“Understanding that 80 per cent of all flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce
seeds, By-law Services recognizes the importance of No Mow May. By waiving the Clean, Safe, Properties By-law, we are pleased to offer residents an opportunity to participate and reconsider their yard maintenance plans during the month of May,” says Brittany Kellington, Supervisor of By-law Services.
