Heroic action by two Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers prevented a possible tragedy in Georgian Bay.
Shortly before 6 p.m. on July 29, police received a 911 call about a woman in deep water without a life jacket in distress at Sunset Point in Collingwood.
It was also reported that her husband was entering the water to attempt to save her.
"The first two officers arrived moments later. They saw the woman about 30 metres offshore in deep water screaming for help. There were strong currents that day and the female was struggling against the current. Officers immediately removed their police equipment and entered the water to rescue the woman. The woman's husband was able to return to shore when he saw police entering the water to rescue his wife," the OPP said in a news release on Thursday.
Police brought the woman back to shore where she was reunited with her husband.
"The OPP would like to take this opportunity to remind the public to swim with a buddy, in a natural body of water like a river or lake conditions can change quickly and cause even experienced swimmers to become overwhelmed by the conditions. Wear a PFD, and when possible, swim with another person or where there are trained lifeguards," the news release stated.
