International suspect arrested in Ontario bomb threats investigation

OPP

OPP say a suspect has been arrested in Morocco by Belgian police in connection with a series of bomb threats in Ontario.

On November 1, provincial police say multiple schools and public facilities received threatening messages indicating bombs had been placed at their locations

"The threats also included a demand for money in exchange for details about the alleged explosives," OPP wrote in a release on Wednesday morning. "No actual explosives were ever found."

An investigation began with the OPP Cybercrime Investigations Team and Belgian Police.

Officers say an arrest warrant was obtained and a 45-year-old from Casablanca, Morocco, was arrested and charged with:

  • Utter Threats - two counts
  • Mischief - two counts
  • Extortion - two counts

"OPP [are] consulting with the Federal Department of Justice to determine how the accused will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice," police added.
