The Ontario government has announced financial aid to Oro-Medonte Township and Springwater Township following last year's ice storm.
Through the province's $90 million Municipal Ice Storm Assistance program, Oro-Medonte will receive up to $5.842 million, while Springwater Township will pocket $672,000.
"The effects of the 2025 ice storm left many parts of our region, including Oro-Medonte, with excessive damage, downed power lines and trees," Doug Downey, MPP for Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte said in a news release on Monday.
Downey added that the funding will help ensure Springwater Township can rebuild from storm's impact.
The March 2025 storm resulted in widespread damage, leaving nearly 400,00 homes and businesses without power across central and eastern Ontario.
Oro-Medonte Mayor Randy Greenlaw said the unprecedented operational demands of the 2025 ice storm placed significant pressure on township resources.
"We are deeply grateful for this financial assistance, which plays an important role in offsetting recovery costs and reducing additional financial impacts on our community," he said in the release.
Springwater Mayor Jennifer Coughlin was also grateful for the financial support.
"This funding will help offset the costs associated with the township’s emergency response and recovery efforts, while reinforcing the province’s commitment to emergency preparedness and public safety," she said in a news release.
