An alert from provincial police after Southern Georgian Bay OPP received a report of a distraction theft in Midland last month that netted thieves about $10,000.
Police say they received a complaint on Dec. 11 that two men had approached the victim in the parking lot of a business and told the woman there was an issue with her tires.
"The victim exited their vehicle leaving a purse inside. It was at this time a secondary male removed the purse from the vehicle while the other male assisted the victim with the tires," OPP said in a news release on Thursday.
Later, the victim discovered that about $10,000 was withdrawn from her account using her Personal Identification Number (PIN), as well as numerous purchases.
Police warn the public about these distraction thefts and the techniques they use, especially about the public protecting their PIN.
"There have been great advancements in debit and credit card technologies. However, vigilance is still required when using your cards. Please cover your PIN, make sure no one is watching or in close proximity to you and never say your PIN out loud for anyone to hear," OPP advised in the news release.
Police have released video surveillance of two suspects in connection with the Midland theft.
