Ontario Provincial Police say two people are fighting for their lives after two separate crashes that happened on Highway 400 early Sunday.
In an update provided by Sgt. Kerry Schmidt on Monday afternoon, police said this started around 3 a.m. when a southbound vehicle near Canal Road left the road and entered the ditch. The vehicle rolled over several times ejecting the 20-year-old male driver. He was located by paramedics with life-threatening injuries.
"Investigators do believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor in this crash," Schmidt added in a post to Twitter.
The driver was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre.
As a result of the crash, the southbound lanes of the 400 were closed at Line 5.
Then about four hours later, at that location, police say another southbound vehicle plowed through the closure colliding with one of the stopped blocker trucks.
"As a result of this collision, two road maintenance crews that were standing outside of their vehicles at the time were seriously injured," said Schmidt. "One female worker, a 51-year-old from Cookstown, was transported to a trauma centre with serious life-threatening injuries."
The other worked was transported to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
The two occupants of the vehicle that broke through the closure, a 23-year-old male driver and a 27-year-old female, suffered minor injuries.
"It does not appear that alcohol was a factor in the second collision," Schmidt noted.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call Aurora OPP at 905-841-5777.
