Southern Georgian Bay OPP officers on snowmobile patrol were conducting a R.I.D.E. check on a marked trail in the area of Triple Bay Road in Tay Township this week when a rider decided not to pull over and kept going. A distance down the trail, he had second thoughts and returned to the spot check. After a chat with the officers, police say the rider fled the scene.
Shortly afterwards, police were contacted by a citizen who told them a snowmobile had crashed into a wire page fence at Triple Bay Road and Highway 12.
Officers from the spot check arrived on scene and found a snowmobile but no operator. Another member of the public told police there was someone running on the trail in a snowmobile suit with a helmet in his hand.
Police caught up with the sprinting suspect and determined he was the guy involved in the crash and the failure to stop for officers at the R.I.D.E. spot check.
A 26-year-old from Tay Township is up on several charges including careless driving, fail to stop for police, fail to wear a proper helmet, disobeying a sign, and driving a snowmobile without a proper trail permit.
